How the MLB postseason works: the 12-team playoff format explained
Twelve teams make the MLB postseason, six per league: three division winners and three Wild Cards.[1] The top two seeds in each league skip the best-of-three Wild Card Series. After that come a best-of-five Division Series and best-of-seven League Championship Series and World Series.[2][3][4]
MLB’s postseason is a 12-team bracket that MLB introduced in 2022.[5] This page explains how teams qualify, how they are seeded and how each round works. Results for 2026 are on the 2026 postseason tracker.
Who qualifies
Each of MLB’s two leagues, the American League and the National League, sends six teams. They are the three division winners plus the three best other teams, called Wild Cards.[1]
Seeds 1 to 3 in each league go to division winners, ranked by record. Seeds 4 to 6 go to the Wild Cards. A division winner is always seeded above a Wild Card, even if the Wild Card has a better record.[6] Since tiebreaker games (Game 163) were eliminated, ties are settled by formula, starting with head-to-head record.[7]
Round 1: Wild Card Series
The top two teams in each league get a week off, called a bye.[2] The other four play short best-of-three series, and the winners move on.[8]
The No. 3 seed plays No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5. The higher seed hosts all three games.[8] This format replaced the single-elimination Wild Card Game, which was used in 2012-19 and 2021.[5] In 2026, all four Wild Card Series were broadcast by NBC, and two of them streamed only on Peacock.[9]
Round 2: Division Series
The Division Series is best-of-five: the first team to win three games advances.[3]
The Division Series uses a 2-2-1 format, with home field going to the higher seed. The bracket is fixed, not reseeded. The No. 1 seed plays the 4-5 winner and the No. 2 seed plays the 3-6 winner, so the top seed never meets another division winner in this round.[3]
Rounds 3 and 4: LCS and World Series
The two Division Series winners in each league meet in the League Championship Series (ALCS and NLCS). The pennant winners then meet in the World Series. Both rounds are best-of-seven, with Games 5 to 7 played only if needed.[4] Home field in the World Series goes to the team with the better regular-season record, whatever its seed.[10] The 2026 World Series is scheduled for 23 to 31 October.[11]
Rule differences in October
- No automatic runner. Extra innings in the postseason start without a runner on second base.[12]
- ABS challenges. The Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System, new in 2026, works the same way as in the regular season.[13]
Could the format change?
In October 2026 MLB proposed shortening the regular season to 154 games from 2029. A league spokesman said this would allow a longer Division Series. The proposal depends on players accepting a salary cap.[14][15] See MLB labor talks 2026.
