F1 2026 title fight: can anyone catch Kimi Antonelli?

Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 Formula 1 championship by 89 points from Mercedes team-mate George Russell after the Singapore Sprint.[1] RacingNews365 counted 175 points left, and two outlets named Austin as the earliest race where Antonelli could clinch the title.[2][3] Russell's back-of-grid start in Singapore and Red Bull's recent wins are the main variables.[4][5]

Seven Grands Prix remained after the Singapore Sprint. Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 drivers’ championship by 89 points.[1][2] This page sets out the sourced facts, how they can be read, and what forecasters have said. We make no predictions of our own, and this is not betting advice. The Singapore Grand Prix result is pending as of 11 October 2026.[6]

    Where the title race stands

After the Singapore Sprint, Antonelli had 325 points. Russell had 236, Lewis Hamilton 221, Charles Leclerc 197, Max Verstappen 196 and Lando Norris 189.[7] Antonelli has won eight of the 16 Grands Prix held so far and Russell three.[8] Singapore hosted the last Sprint of the season.[9] RacingNews365 counted 175 points left: seven Grands Prix worth 25 points each.[2]

    Russell’s difficult fortnight

Russell won in Azerbaijan on 26 September.[10] He then retired at Sepang and crashed out of the lead on the first lap of the Singapore Sprint, scoring nothing at either.[11][12] He qualified sixth for the Grand Prix but starts last because of a 40-place penalty for extra power-unit components.[4] He said he hoped to reach the points.[13]

For Russell, the cost of the last two weekends comes on top of the points gap. Starting last at a street circuit limits how much he can recover in Singapore. Antonelli starts fourth and can extend the lead without winning. Russell himself pointed to Antonelli’s win from 19th at Monza after similar engine changes, while expecting a harder race in Singapore.[14][13]

Is Mercedes still the fastest car?

Mercedes ran two car specifications in Singapore after struggling to understand the upgrade it introduced at Sepang.[15] Antonelli, running the upgrade, said the team was starting to see its potential.[16] Team principal Toto Wolff said the split was meant to build the team’s understanding of the update. With Russell at the back, he called the race “damage limitation”.[17] Verstappen won at Sepang and in the Singapore Sprint, and took pole for the Grand Prix.[5][18][19] Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies said the car had been quickest in three straight qualifying sessions, continuing a trend that began at Monza.[20] Hamilton said Ferrari would try to work as a team with both cars.[21]

The recent results suggest Mercedes no longer has a clear pace advantage. That matters less to Antonelli than to Russell. A leader can bank podiums while rivals take wins, but a chaser needs wins and needs the leader to finish lower down. If Red Bull and Ferrari keep winning, they take points away from both Mercedes drivers. That slows Antonelli’s progress, but it also makes Russell’s comeback harder.

    What forecasters say

RacingNews365 and GPblog both concluded that Antonelli cannot clinch the title in Singapore. Both name the United States Grand Prix in Austin on 25 October as his earliest chance, for example if he wins in Singapore and Russell scores nothing.[3][22] These are mathematical scenarios, not predictions. Whether any of them happens depends on races not yet run. ContentLora does not make its own title forecast, and nothing here is betting advice.
