MLB labor talks 2026: the salary cap fight and lockout risk
MLB's collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. on 1 December 2026, and the central dispute is a salary cap that owners want and the players' union rejects.[1][2] Owners have proposed a $245.3 million cap with a $171.2 million floor and, in October, a 154-game season tied to the cap. Commentators expect a lockout if there is no deal.[3][4][5]
MLB’s labor agreement with its players expires at 11:59 p.m. on 1 December 2026, a few weeks after the World Series.[1][6] The two sides disagree on the basic structure of player pay: owners want a salary cap and the players’ union says it will not accept one.[2] This page sets out the proposals and the positions, then what may happen next. Forecasts are labelled.
Background
The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) was ratified in March 2022, ending a 99-day owners’ lockout that delayed the 2022 season.[7] MLB has not lost regular-season games to a stoppage since 1995. The 1994 players’ strike cancelled that year’s postseason.[8] MLB is the only major American sports league without a salary cap.[2]
The players’ union has also changed leaders. Executive director Tony Clark resigned as 2026 spring training began, and Bruce Meyer has led it on an interim basis since.[9]
What is on the table
- Salary cap and floor (owners). A $245.3 million cap and a $171.2 million payroll floor, reported in May 2026. It is the first cap proposal since the 1994-95 strike.[3]
- Media revenue (owners). Local media revenue would be pooled equally among the 30 teams and split 50-50 with players, replacing the current revenue-sharing plan.[10]
- Contract limits (owners). Contracts would be capped at six years for players re-signing with their club and five years for those changing teams.[11]
- 154-game season (owners, 8 October 2026). The season would be cut from 162 to 154 games from 2029, contingent on a cap and floor.[4] MLB said this would help player health and allow a longer Division Series.[12]
- Roster size (players). A 28-man roster for the first 15 days of the season, instead of 26, to discourage service-time manipulation.[13]
The two positions
Commissioner Rob Manfred said in July that his ownership group was “more united than any group in my entire time in baseball”. He framed the cap as a response to fans’ concerns about competitive balance.[14]
Bruce Meyer replied that a cap is “the ultimate excuse not to compete”.[15] He had earlier said owners were “not seeking to cap their profits or asset values, only player salaries”.[16] After the 154-game proposal, the MLBPA said every MLB proposal was contingent on a cap that “guts player rights and compensation”. It added that players would respond at the bargaining table.[17]
The October proposal links a shorter season and a longer Division Series to the cap.[4][12] MLB appears to be offering changes it believes players value in exchange for the one change they have refused. The union’s response suggests it sees the package that way too.[17] Neither side had publicly moved off its core position as of 11 October.
What may happen after 1 December
Fox News reported in July that, if long-held speculation is correct, owners will probably lock out the players if there is no deal. Labor lawyers at Jackson Lewis wrote that MLB can be expected to use the same tools as in 2021.[5] Fox News reported that Manfred remains “an optimist”, saying that “if people engage in the process, that you find ways through things”.[18]
A lockout in December would not by itself cancel games, because the 2027 regular season does not begin until spring. The 2021-22 lockout ran for 99 days before a deal.[7] Whether any 2027 games are lost is unknown.
