Slot left Liverpool with immediate effect on 30 May 2026, two seasons after winning the league in his first year.[20][29] Maresca signed a three-year contract, and City paid Chelsea more than £17m in compensation.[22] Manchester United made Michael Carrick their permanent manager after a spell as caretaker.[30]

    The Manchester City verdict

An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges of breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18, and of most charges of failing to co-operate. The league published a redacted decision on 29 September 2026.[3] The commission found that sponsorship deals with Abu Dhabi-linked companies were shams, part of a “Disguised Funding Scheme”.[31] City deny wrongdoing and have appealed.[4] No sanction had been set as of early October; a sanctions hearing was expected to run alongside the appeal.[32] For how a points deduction could reshape the title race, see title race analysis.

    Rule changes this season

From 2026-27, the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules were replaced by Squad Cost Ratio rules, which cap squad spending at 85% of revenue.[33][34] The calendar also changed: the September and October international breaks were merged into one window from 21 September to 6 October.[35] How the Premier League works explains the rules in more detail.
